The baptism of Christ The Baptism of Christ

Most of the windows in St. Matthew's were designed by Mr. William Cole of London, England. He was chief artist for the William Morris Co., Ltd. which has now gone out of business. Mr. Frederick Cole, member of the glass painters guild, designed the most recent windows and was employed by J. Wippell & Company of Exeter, England, who purchased the defunct Morris company.

The window pictured to the left is found in the Chapel at St. Matthew's. It depicts the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The figures at the base portray all of mankind who have the privilege of Holy Baptism. Being at the base of the foot is symbolic of the way in which we enter into the special relationship to God and become His children and heirs. The dove at the top symbolizes God's Holy Spirit. The Cross is symbolic of the journey all of us must make. The window was given by Mr. M.K. Brown in Loving Memory of his father, Thomas Davy Brown - Born 16th October 1828 - Died 21st December 1918. A special thanks goes to Iris Ragsdale for the above information.
